Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)

Dar a Luz Birth & Health Center is looking for an experienced Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) to join our birth center team! We have a big, bright vision for serving New Mexico families and if you share our passion for birth, babies, and empowering, individualized care, we are looking for you. Join our 20-woman team that is dedicated to birth work through a sustainable business model.

Qualifications: The ideal applicant has birth center experience, but those with hospital backgrounds with an exceptional desire to protect physiologic birth will be considered. New graduates with similar experience in school will be considered. Appropriate midwifery licenses are required, including NRP and BLS.

Duties: Dar a Luz is quiet and relaxing with multiple suites for prenatal care and labor. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to holding space for the miracle of natural birth by providing empowering, compassionate, and holistic care. Because pregnancy and birth are normal events in a pregnant person’s life, birth center midwives support normal birth whenever possible. Dar a Luz midwives are independent providers who enjoy a truly collegial consulting relationship with local physicians. The right CNM for our practice will join six experienced midwives as an integral part of the woman/pregnant person-centered care we provide. Our midwives are at the very heart of Dar a Luz’s service to clients. They provide the majority of clinic care and labor support. Each midwife has additional ongoing responsibilities such as chart reviews, contributing to projects, public outreach, and staff trainings. Each staff member wears many hats so you’ll have lots of opportunities to grow and use your special talents.

Schedule: You’ll work about 26 shifts per 6-week rotation with 2 call weekends (Friday-Sunday) per six-week period. These shifts include clinic and call and the shifts vary from 8-24 hours to average 3-4 days per week. Your clinic time will be spent providing pregnancy, postpartum, newborn, and well-woman care. The lifestyle of a birth center CNM in a small practice is more flexible in some ways, but the call time can be demanding, and it works best if you have family and partner support. Midwives who are happiest at Dar a Luz tend to be optimistic and open-minded, eliminate drama through proactive communication, strive for a balanced life for themselves and their coworkers, and enjoy the give-and take of a close and supportive team.

Compensation: We pay a base salary plus additional stipends for births. Employee health, dental, vision, life, malpractice insurance (no tail), and license renewals are paid, and we offer retirement investment plans. Altogether, it’s a robust compensation package, comparable to other birth centers and other non-profit organizations.

About us: Dar a Luz is a unique midwife-operated practice in a non-profit freestanding birth center. Reminiscent of a bed and breakfast or day spa in the heart of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, we provide full scope services for the management of low and moderate risk pregnancy and birth. Together we have found our passion supporting hundreds of expecting pregnant people each year, most of whom birth at the center and return for postpartum and newborn care, lactation, birth control, support groups, annuals, and subsequent pregnancies. We have good relationships with local providers and hospitals with the ability to consult and transfer care smoothly if needed. We also collaborate with many other professionals in the community. Dar a Luz opened in March 2011 with two midwives and a nurse. We have since grown to a staff of 20 and have caught over 1500 babies at the center. We helped to research and draft legislation for NM birth center licensure and were the first to obtain it. We are nationally accredited with the CABC, and support the AABC, NM Midwives Alliance, Breastfeeding Task Force, and many others. We created first-of-their-kind collaborations with doulas, counselors, human milk banks, and many other community partners. The fulfilling work we do, the wonderful clients we attract, and the fun and positive work environment we’ve fostered make it an amazing environment to work in. We are deeply grateful to our staff, clients, and community, and proud to serve NM families!

Registered Nurse (RN)

Dar a Luz Birth & Health Center is seeking an enthusiastic Registered Nurse (RN) to join our birth center team.

Qualifications: The most attractive applicant has at least one year of experience in a birth center, L&D, or mother/baby care setting, and is passionate about birth and the midwifery model of care. IBCLC certification is strongly preferred. Must have an RN license in New Mexico with current BLS and NRP certifications. Must be detail-oriented and able to provide timely, high-quality documentation in electronic health records. The best fit is a problem-solver, team player, and multi-tasker with strong organizational skills and excellent written and oral communications. New graduates with related experience such as doula work may be considered. Only serious candidates interested in a long-term relationship with Dar a Luz should apply, as most of our nurses stay longer than four years.

Duties: The right RN for our practice will join six experienced nurses as an integral part of the client- centered care we provide. Nurses get to know all of our clients by providing clinic support, which includes injections and blood draws, sending out labs, fetal monitoring, newborn hearing tests and blood draws, reconciling lab results, supply inventory and stocking, cleaning and disinfecting, and triaging phone calls. Midwives provide the majority of labor support, while nurses assist with the birth and newborn transition, recovery, and discharge (usually 4-12 hours postpartum). Nurses stay after discharge to chart and do general clean up and restocking of birth rooms. Extra cleaning may be required occasionally. Each nurse has additional ongoing responsibilities such as breastfeeding and pregnancy counseling, childbirth education, billing, scheduling, data entry, quality assurance, checking inventory, ordering supplies, community outreach, or public relations.

Schedule: A typical full-time RN schedule at the birth center is very different from hospital shift work in that there are fewer scheduled clinic work days but more time on call for births. A 6-week schedule for full time nurses (to cover clinic shifts, 1st call, and 2nd call), gives each nurse 6 clinic days (8:30 – 5:30, Monday through Thursday), 9 days of 1st call (24-hour shift) and 9 days of 2nd call (24-hour shift). Time off includes 6 weekdays and 4 weekends (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) per 6 week schedule period. The average is 23-24 scheduled shifts for a 6wk (42d) schedule period, so you get 18 days off per 42 day period. The lifestyle of a birth center nurse in a small practice is more flexible in some ways but the call time can be demanding, and it works best if you have family and partner support. Nurses who are happiest at Dar a Luz tend to be optimistic and open-minded, proactive communicators, strive for a balanced life for themselves and their coworkers, and enjoy the give-and-take of a close and supportive team.

Compensation: We pay a base salary plus additional fees for births and additional services like lactation consultations, classes, etc. Employee health, dental, vision, life, and malpractice insurance are paid, and we offer retirement investment plans. You can make more money in a hospital, but our nurses say they prefer this job because of our schedule, clients, coworkers, and culture.
