Doulas
What is a doula?
Doula (pronounced “doo-luh”) is a trained and experienced birth companion who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the birthing person before, during, and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. This support is extended beyond the birthing person to provide the support person(s) with information and emotional support.
A doula does not provide medical care, but is a wonderful addition to your birth team. The presence of a doula has been shown to shorten labor, reduce pain, dramatically reduce the need for interventions such as epidurals and c-sections, increase satisfaction with the experience and deepen bonding with the new baby. New Mexico Medicaid covers doula services; we recommend you ask if they accept Medicaid.
How can I get a doula?
We encourage our pregnant clients to access doula services through community doulas. Below are ways to access doulas:
- NM Doula Directory for independent doulas.
- New Life Birth Services is an organization that Dar a Luz has worked with for many years and trusts to provide excellent doula services. They host Doula Teas (virtually!) the fourth Monday of every month, register HERE.
-
ABQ Doulas and Birth Services recognizes that every birth is unique to the family experiencing it. ABQ Doulas support a peaceful, informed, and positive journey.
