Dar a Luz will be ceasing birth services effective December 15, 2025. As we transition to encompass a wider spectrum of whole-life care, we will update our website with all of our new services… stay tuned!

2025 National Midwifery Week October 5th – 11th

National Midwifery Week (#MidwiferyWeek2025) was created by the American
College Nurse Midwives to celebrate and recognize midwives and midwife-led care.
Midwifery as practiced by Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) encompasses the
independent provision of care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum
period, sexual and reproductive health, gynecologic health, and family planning
services, including preconception care.

Midwives provide primary care for individuals from adolescence throughout the
lifespan as well as care for the healthy newborn during the first 28 days of life.

Midwives provide care for all individuals who seek midwifery care, inclusive of all
gender identities and sexual orientations, working in diverse settings such as
ambulatory care clinics, private offices, telehealth and other methods of remote care
delivery, community and public health systems, homes, hospitals, and birth centers.

Dar a Luz is proud to have 6 incredible midwives on our team who have joyously
attended over 1700 births and have supported over 4000 New Mexican families.

Show your appreciation for our midwives this
2025 National Midwifery Week by donating to DAL!

Can you help us to get to $10,000 closer to our $100,000 year-end goal
before the end of #MidwiferyWeek2025?

“A lot of people think midwives only care for people during childbearing and don’t
realize that they are trained in many areas of women’s/well person health. For
centuries, midwives not only cared for women in labor but also offered services for
other health issues and offered various kinds of remedies in the form of herbal
medicine and tinctures. As midwifery moved into the modern world, so did the
education. Midwives either learn through apprentice programs and take a certification
exam (licensed or certified professional midwives) or go through a master’s or
doctorate program to become a certified nurse-midwife. One is not better than the
other. However, the scope of practice differs and CNMs have more authority in every
state in the US—that is they are independent providers and have prescriptive
authority which gives them a wider scope of practice. All of the midwives at DAL
are CNMs.

In current midwifery practice, midwives are able to care for healthy women across
a spectrum of health services (this includes people with uteruses and people who
identify as female; for the purposes of this newsletter, we will use the term ‘women’).
Most of these are specific to women’s health, but our scope of practice also includes
some basic primary care. With additional training, CNMs can provide care for more
complex gynecological issues as well. In addition, some CNMs are dually certified as
nurse practitioners which gives them an even wider scope of practice.

Midwives can also provide care for mental health issues and can start/continue
medication management for those who need it. With additional training, some
midwives do have and offer more mental health care including some talk therapy.

Dar a Luz will be offering expansion of all of these services outside of birth care.
Stay tuned for more services to come as we continue to grow and expand.”

We are asking a few of our key partners to rally their friends, family, and networks to
support our work for our Help DAL Thrive campaign. By becoming a peer-to-peer
fundraiser, you’ll help us expand reproductive health care services at Dar a Luz, and
you’ll help your friends feel good about doing good.

Starting a fundraiser is easy to do, and it’s fun. We’ll even give you all the tools you’ll
need to make a difference. With your help we can ensure that we are committed to
caring for women and people in this community who are in need of excellent care
across the lifespan and can’t access it for various reasons. We have persevered
through so much over the years and we won’t stop now. We also believe in hope.
And we hope that you will too.

Don’t worry if Peer-to-Peer fundraising isn’t your thing – you can donate directly to
our Help DAL Thrive Campaign.
