2025 Giving Tuesday: A message from our Executive Director

Giving Tuesday is upon us and we need your help as much as ever! Please join us on
this international day of philanthropy to propel us into the new year and expanded
services. Since my initial appeal at the end of September to raise $100k in the last
quarter of the year, we have raised $40,675! At the same time, we started a massive
outreach campaign for the expansion of our well-woman/person and menopause
care. In two months, we have scheduled and cared for 150 people for their
gynecology needs—anywhere from preconception counseling to contraception to
menopause care. For reference: for the entire year of 2024, we scheduled a total of
178 gynecology visits. This shows that our community needs this kind of care, too.

We also caught 25 babies at the center between October and November—birth
numbers that we haven’t seen in months. It has been triumphant to welcome so
many babies earth-side into our hands in these final weeks while welcoming back
those who were transferred. Simultaneously, we have been holding each other up,
preparing for this transition and continuing to give our clients the most beautiful care.
That’s the thing about transitions: it’s some of the most challenging work—
emotionally, physically, spiritually—and often the most breathtaking at the end of it…
it’s “brutiful”…equal parts beautiful and brutal.

So today, in honor of those 25 babies born at Dar a Luz in the last few weeks, along
with the last 1724 born here since we opened, the 1008 who birthed with our
hospital partners, and the last few who are sure to meet our acquaintance in these
final days, our goal is to raise $25,000 from our community. And as it turns out, we
are giving you a head start! A very generous donor has made a dollar for dollar
$10,000 challenge grant. That means they are donating $10,000 to our Let Dar a Luz Thrive
campaign and challenging YOU, our collective community, to match that. And
heck, let’s go beyond and get to that full $25,000.

I write this every year and it bears repeating: our staff and board not only personally
fundraise for our organization but they all donate as well, each and every one of
them. It’s another way that we show how important this work is to us. I have always
said we must lead by example and we cannot ask others to give, and give
generously, if we do not do the same.

Once again, as I finish another appeal, I am swept away with deep and never-ending
gratitude for all who have walked through our doors over the past 15 years and all
who have given to us to keep this organization afloat. Every penny has mattered.
Every appointment. Every employee. Every ounce of trust to care for this community
and beyond. It has been our privilege to care for every single person. Thank you for
giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to create the space for the miracle of birth.
