Prenatal &
Postpartum Care

We are continuing to offer perinatal services from conception to 36 wks including prenatal labs, ultrasound referrals, prenatal midwifery care, as well as postpartum couplet care!

Step One:
Confirm that Dar a Luz meets your needs

Pregnant people with these conditions ARE ELIGIBLE for Prenatal Care at Dar a Luz:
  • Advanced age (women and birthing people 35 and over)
  • Teen pregnancy
  • Previous premature birth
  • Previous over-due birth
  • Previous large baby
  • Previous pregnancy-induced high blood pressure
  • Previous postpartum hemorrhage
  • Previous miscarriage
  • Use of fertility measures to achieve pregnancy
  • Diet controlled gestational diabetes
  • Previous birth with forceps or vacuum extractor
  • Diagnosis of genital herpes
  • Previous cesarean section 
These conditions require a higher level of care than Dar a Luz can offer:
  • Pregnant with more than one baby
  • Pre-existing diabetes
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Heavy cigarette smoker
  • Current drug user
  • Chronic high blood pressure
  • Severe heart disease
  • Epilepsy/seizure disorder
  • Hyper-thyroid disease (over-active thyroid) (Note: low or hypothyroid disease that is well managed is acceptable)
  • Myasthenia gravis

Step Two:
Learn About The Services We Provide

Prenatal Care

  • Pregnancy testing 
  • Miscarriage management, aftercare, options counseling 
  • Management of early pregnancy complications including fatigue, nausea/vomiting, bleeding
  • Comprehensive prenatal labs
  • Referral for dating and anatomy ultrasound 
  • Prenatal visits with a nurse-midwife from conception to 36 wks  
  • Treatment of conditions and infections related to pregnancy 
  • Choice of birth classes 
  • 24-hour access to a nurse or midwife
  • Home-like environment; private room; freedom to move, eat and drink; and attentive care during pregnancy visits 
  • Whole-food supplements, breastfeeding supplies and herbal support in our retail shop 
  • Support in transferring to any Albuquerque-based hospital provider at 36 weeks for the remainder of prenatal care, labor and birth. 
  • Advocacy in early discharge from the hospital when clinically appropriate, and return to Dar a Luz for postpartum and newborn care

Postpartum & Newborn Care

  • See all of our parents and babies together as a couplet
  • Postpartum care
    • Postpartum visits after hospital discharge through 1 year
    • Evaluation and treatment of postpartum complications including vaginal tears, infections, high blood pressure
    • Birth control planning such as natural family planning, pills, IUDs, Nexplanon, Depo 
    • Perinatal mental health conditions including postpartum anxiety, depression, OCD
  • Newborn checkups (first six weeks)
    • All state screenings including CCHD, Metabolic, and hearing 
    • Evaluation and treatment of newborn complications including weight loss and jaundice
    • Newborn care assistance and classes
    • Carseat training and assistance
  • Breast and chest-feeding support
    • Visits with Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) available 7 days a week 
    • Evaluation and treatment of breast conditions including engorgement, mastitis, clogged ducts, etc. 
    • Breastfeeding support groups and classes
